San Remo Estates Historical Marker

Sarasota County Historical Marker Program

The Historical Marker Program recognizes historic sites, persons, and events that are significant in the areas of archaeology, architecture, traditional culture, and local, regional, state, and national history.

In order to be considered, proposed markers must first meet three requirements:

  • Historical significant sites must be at least fifty years old.
  • Historical events must have occurred at least fifty years ago.
  • Individuals still living cannot be considered for commemoration.

How to Apply for a Marker

  • The process of applying for a marker begins with completing a Historical Marker Application. Completed applications and the required attachments should be submitted to the Sarasota County History Center at 337 N Tamiami Trail, Osprey, FL 34229. Electronic submissions can be sent to History Center Manager Dr. Josh Goodman at jgoodman@scgov.net.
  • Applications must be complete, including all required attachments, before staff submit them to the Historical Commission for consideration.
  • History Center staff will work with applicants to correct errors and secure any missing attachments. Once the application is complete, it goes to the Historical Commission for their review.
  • The Historical Commission will assign one of its members to take a closer look at the application and the supporting research. Once that member completes his or her review, the application (with any edits) will come before the full Commission a second time. The Historical Commission will then vote on whether to recommend the proposed historical marker to the Board of County Commissioners.
  • The Board of County Commissioners is the final approval authority for new historical markers. Once the Board approves the new marker, History Center staff will work with the applicant to discuss the timeline for erecting the marker and planning an appropriate ceremony.
