Eco-Explorer Kits

Over 15 years Sarasota County’s Libraries & Historical Resources has partnered with the County’s UF/IFAS Extension Services and Sustainability Department to create and offer a variety of environmentally focused items available for checkout at the library. These include a variety of Eco-Explorer Kits.

Eco-Explorer Kits are designed to inspire outdoor adventures and eco-friendly living. Kit themes include nature exploration, insects, birding, and sustainability. Each Eco-Explorer kit contains all you'll need to get started, including books, gear, and activities designed to inspire exploration for all ages. Check out kits for free with a valid Sarasota County library card.

The Kits we have available are:

• DIY Home (Energy) Audit Kit - Evaluate home energy and water use.
  • This Do It Yourself (DIY) Audit Kit and corresponding Home Energy and Water Evaluation Guide have been created to provide Sarasota County homeowners with a simple and economical way to evaluate their home energy and water use and learn ways that they can save resources and money.
  • The kit is part of the Sarasota County Energy Upgrade program which provides residents with various levels of information on residential resource saving opportunities. The kit is designed for homeowners who would like to go much further into detail in analyzing their home's energy and water use and quantifying savings and provides a step-by-step guide, as well as the technical equipment necessary to determine specific energy and water use profiles and solutions for the home.
• Family Green Living Kit - Discover ways to live “greener” with books and activities.
  • Discover what you can do to live 'greener' with the Family Green Liviing Kit. Learn about sustainability and how you can make a positive impact for our world through the fun, family-friendly games, activities, and books in the kit.
  • You can use this kit at home, in your backyard, at a local park, or anywhere you go. Become an environmental steward and see how easy it is to help the planet through your everyday actions.
• Explore Your World Kit - Learn about the natural world around you with books and activities.
  • Florida has the third most diverse wildlife population of any state. But rapidly growing urban development, particularly in coastal communities such as ours, is destroying native wildlife habitat.
  • Your Florida yard can provide habitat for wildlife in two major ways: By increasing biodiversity, in part by using a variety of plants in your yard's design and by creating landscaped islands and natural corridors of plants that connect bordering properties. Animals use these corridors to travel from one natural area to another, which in turn fosters and benefits wildlife on a larger neighborhood scale.
• Insect Investigator Kit - Investigate the world of bugs with books and activities.
  • Recent studies show that time in nature builds confidence, promotes creativity and imagination, teaches responsibility, provides stimulation, gets children moving, makes them think, and reduces stress and fatigue. In this kit, you will find activities designed to help investigators of all ages get outside and explore their world.
  • The activities can be done in any environment from your neighborhood and backyard to a natural area, such as your local park. Find any type of green space and start investigating!
• Wings in the Wild Birding Kit - Learn more about the birds in your backyard, at the beach, or wherever you are!
